when i met my best friend in the world my 2nd year of college, she had crazy short short hair. i asked her a few weeks later why she cuts her hair so short.
she told me that her friend had been diagnosed with cancer their senior year of high school (in a tiny town in no-where-ville northern maine) and lost all her hair due to the treatments. my best friend shaved her head too, so that her friend didn’t have to face high school bullies alone and bald, let alone facing cancer.
when she told me that, i knew we’d be friends forever. to this day, people from her hometown high school sometimes call her “dyke” when she goes to visit her parents, and you can see the pain in her eyes. but then she stands up a little taller, knowing she did the right thing back then.
my best friend is married & has her own daughter now, and couldn’t care less about the ignorant bullying that she’s “just some lesbian” by those jerks when she was a teenager. because she & her friend survived that cancer, and high school, together.
my best friend’s name is sheila and her story gives me hope.
